Fiber-optic gyroscope activities in Korea's defense and civilian applications: insights from FIBERPRO (Invited Paper)

This paper traces the historical development, market dynamics, and strategic decisions surrounding Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs) in South Korea. Beginning at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in the early 1990s, development was influenced by global competition from established foreign inertial measurement devices, domestic economic challenges, and defense-driven innovation. Collaborative efforts among government research institutions and private industry led to significant advancements, with FIBERPRO as the only local provider of FOG-based devices. FIBERPRO has played an important role in expanding FOGs across multiple performance grades into civilian maritime and space markets. These expansions of FOG reflect Korea’s growing expertise and competitiveness in the Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) field. click here
